Phil, Swansea, lives in a 4-bedroom detached house built in the 1970s
Phil has lived in his home for 32 years - it was heated by a gas system boiler until he had an air source heat pump installed in 2022.

“We had our heat pump installed in July 2022 - our boiler was 30 years old and we wanted to get off the gas system. The reduced carbon footprint was the big seller. I wanted to run on a carbon-free existence with no energy or transport costs and all electricity from renewable sources, and we have achieved this.
“We have upgraded the house insulation over the years. We also had 4kw of solar panels installed way back in 2010. The house has roofs which face east and west rather than south which is sub optimal -but I have found solar to be 100% fantastic.
“It’s been no problem adapting to the new technology. Because we were retiring and would be at home more, the ‘always on, always heated’ approach of a heat pump works for us really well. While you do need to adapt to a different way of heating your home slowly you don’t actually need to touch the system.
“We are on a time of use tariff with Octopus - and I use my heat pump flexibly - pre warming the home when the tariff is low and turning it off at peak cost times.
