Neil, Edinburgh: lives in a 1950s three-bedroom semi-detached house

"I moved to this house in February 2021. I was already interested in becoming more green: I had an electric car and was thinking about getting solar panels. I hadn’t heard of heat pumps, but when I started reading about decarbonisation, I realised they run off electricity, don’t burn fossil fuels and could heat your house."

"When I bought the property, the bedrooms had an old gas boiler central heating system that needed to be replaced. I also had to fully rewire the property and thought, if I have to do this work anyway, I want to move to as clean and renewable a system as possible.

I contacted Home Energy Scotland and they were incredibly helpful.

It can be quite intimidating, but the key is having access to good-quality advice. Speaking to specialists who do it all the time is incredibly helpful, and people who work in the renewable energy field have knowledge on who to speak to. The company that installed my solar panels told me who to contact about a heat pump.

I’m very happy with the system and find it really easy to use. It’s not like gas central heating that turns on twice a day. I’ve got one thermostat, which I set to 21 degrees and leave it running constantly.”
